Today we skyped Room 13 but at Enner Glynn school. I said a joke.

By Bailey.

Today my class skyped Room 13 at Enner Glynn school. Some children from my class asked Room 13 questions. I asked, "How hard is your maths?" They said, "Easy!" Also I asked, "What mask are you going to wear for the Masked Parade?" They showed us their aboriginal mask. It was awesome.

By Maddison.

It was special because our Room 13 teacher is Lesley, our student teacher is Lesley! And the Enner Glynn Room 13 teacher is Lesley too!
Our student teacher Lesley's son, Nicholas is in Room 13 at Enner Glynn and so is the daughter of our ICT support - Tania, her daughter's name is Brittany. So we have a special link with Room 13 at Enner Glynn. We asked each other questions and each class sang our Masked Parade theme song to each other! (Enner Glynn school is situated in Stoke, Nelson.)

Dealing with Disability - Donna Case

Donna Case is physically disabled - she is a paraplegic after having suffered a spinal tumour about 16 years ago.

In this image, Donna is demonstrating how she drives her car. The shiny white stick is the brake.

Donna rides a specially built hand cycle - it looks like a cross bewteen a tricycle and wheelchair. Donna turns the handles to make the bike go. She has powerful arms and is very strong and fit.

Donna showed us the trophy and medal she won after her participation in the New York marathon. Donna has hand-cycled the New York marathon twice and has also completed other marathons.

Donna is an amazing lady who has not allowed her disability to be a disability!

Inquiry Learning in Room 13

People with Disabilities
We are currently learning how people with disabilities can access and enjoy a lifestyle similar to able-bodied people like all of us in Room 13.

One of our visitors was Stefan Hervel who is a teacher at Maitai School where all the students have disabilities and severe handicaps. Stefan showed us an amazing array of specialised adaptive and assistive technology. For students who have poor control of their arms and hands, some of the equipment was activated by the student pushing down on a press pad.

This computer is a very robust ToughBook similar to what soldiers in the field use. It has a revolving screen, will not break if dropped, and will not 'drown' from liquid spills or brief immersion.

Some of the equipment was a lot of fun to play with. We enjoyed playing games with a huge stretchy multi-coloured band.

In this photo Kyiah is showing us how a person in a wheelchair can enjoy moving under a flapping parachute and can feel the strong breeze it creates.

"Vagrants, Stragglers and the Unloved" at the Suter

Room 13 had an interesting experience at the Suter Art Gallery on Monday. We went to view the exhibition and installation of unusual and appealing art works by Bing Dawe. The artist had created sculptures, weavings and paintings depicting animals that were not thought of as being particularly desirable or attractive in previous years when he was a child. We saw eels, shags, hares, Canada geese and other migratory birds. After viewing the beautifully displayed works of art we split into small groups to discuss BIRDS - what we think are good points about birds, and what we think are bad points about birds.

With the artist's creations in our minds we moved outdoors in front of the Suter Gallery and Esther taught us how to make our own bird creations with clay. We learned much about how to work with clay and we made some really interesting birds.
Everyone is fully involved.

Torfun shows us her bird.

The birds are going to be 'fired' in Esther's home kiln. After that our creative works will be on display in Room 13!

York Valley Landfill

After a class visit to the Re-cycling Centre and the Re-use Centre off Pascoe Street, we finished our field trip by driving up to the Landfill at York Valley to see what happens to Nelson's trash that can't be re-cycled or re-used.

OOOH!! POOH!! STINK!! YUCK!! WHO MADE ALL THAT RUBBISH??!!

After watching the machines at work and rubbish trucks dumping their loads we were able to ask Kevin Nilsen the manager of the landfill, our inquiry learning questions. Kevin answered our questions and told us many interesting facts about the landfill. We learned lots - one of the fascinating things is that the smelly methane gas that is formed by the compacting and decomposing of the rubbish is piped to Nelson Public Hospital where it is used for heating the whole of the hospital.

ROOM 13 SURE WERE IMPRESSED BY THE YORK VALLEY LANDFILL!!

Recycling Paper in Room 13

Our buddy class, Room 8, has been showing us a good way to use our waste paper. They know all about how to recycle paper to use in a variety of interesting ways.

Firstly, industrious fingers shredded the waste paper into tiny pieces, lots & lots!

After soaking the paper in water, Freya used her food processor to pulverise the sodden paper.
The resulting squishy product was tipped onto a framed mesh sieve and dipped into water dye. It was then forced down to squeeze out as much liquid as possible.

Finally the coloured recycled, dyed squishy paper was turned onto O.H.P. transparencies and carefully sponged to absorb as much of the liquid as possible. Then they were all placed on shelves to dry.

Next term, Rooms 8 and 13 are going to make something creative with the results.

Cross Country Races

After fitness and aerobic training - power walking and jogging, for weeks the day of the Cross Country races was full of excitement, competition and pushing oneself to do our best. The first of these two photos shows Holly at the start of the 7 year old girls race where she finished a most creditable 2nd especially seeing she ran a slightly longer route and had a fall on the way! The second photo is Karli at the start of the 6 year old girls race where she finished an easy 1st. Well done girls! And congratulations to all Room 13 competitors, you were fast, fit and fantastic.

Stained Glass Window Displays

Room 13 children have made a creative, artistic stained glass window display. The ideas and the work were started at the Museum when we visited to listen to the stories and view the real stained glass windows which depict flora and fauna indigenous to New Zealand. We like the way our art works are highlighted by the morning sun. If we close the curtains they look like shadow puppets.

Autumn Leaves

Room 13 children have been lucky this autumn being surrounded by liquid amber trees. Who needs a structured playground when glorious coloured leaves are fluttering around, and can be scrunched, thrown, built into forts, hidden beneath and used in any number of creative ways!
